This article represents the contribution of the web-platform handlungs:plan to this years World Occupational Therapy Day, which is celebrated on October the 27th 2011. On top of that, this article is written bilingual (German and English), and will contribute to the blog-carnival, that was proclaimed by Linda Harrison, Occupational Therapist from Winnipeg/Canada, on her blog “Linda’s Daily Living Skills” on the occasion of World OT-Day – true to the motto “Celebrating Our Global Identity”. The official logo of World OT-Day is provided by the World Federation of Occupational Therapists (WFOT).

OT24VX – was verbirgt sich hinter diesem Kürzel?

Introduction

Offizielles Logo des Welt Ergotherapie-Tages 2011 der World Federation of Occupational TherapistsIt’s World Occupational Therapy Day again, this will be something: a myriad of Occupational Therapists in an myriad of countries worldwide is celebrating this day approximately on October 27th – approximately hence the fact, that the exact date may vary in consideration of local circumstances (which is at least not the case in Austria, Switzerland or Germany this year). To make everything just a little more complicated, the respective motto of World Occupational Therapy Day is left in the responsibility of the local OT-organizations of the respective countries – a tribute to the distinct individualism in the field of OT-work? Let’s shed some light into the darkness…

World Occupational Therapy Day in Austria, Germany and Switzerland

Let me say one thing first: detailed information about the individual programmes to promote World OT-Day is available via the professional organizations of the respective countries, in this article i’ll only outline the key points of the programmes of the countries mentioned above. This article is based on information available up to the 30th of September 2011, changes that occur on the concerned websites after this date will not be considered.

In Austria, World Occupational Therapy Day is going to be characterized by the motto “Occupational Therapy in mental health-care”. Aside of a special, topic-related, issue of the periodical of Ergotherapie Austria “ergotherapie”, the local groups are organising lectures, guided tours and information stands related to the topic in the nine provinces of Austria.

In Germany the motto is going to be “What man is capable of!”, there will be actions like phone hotlines regarding Occupational Therapy, lectures on various topics and open days in various institutions.

The motto in Switzerland seems to be “Act.Shape.Live:Occupational Therapy”, no further information about detailed events can be found on their website so far.

The (interesting) view beyond the edge of the plate

I am of the opinion, that detailed information regarding World Occupational Therapy Day is unnecessary in this article, OT’s in the mentioned countries will be informed via their federal OT-organizations anyway, so they’ll to be able to celebrate World OT-Day in an appropriate way. Much more of interest than that (no offense meant, I’m looking forward to October the 27th, also in Austria), is an event, that will take place online, namely the “Occupational Therapy 24-hour Virtual Exchange” (OT24VX), which is organised by a collective of six female OT’s from New Zealand, Canada, the UK and the USA, which is being held the second time this year.

OT24VX – what’s the meaning of this abbreviation?

Basically it’s an event, which consists of a 24 hour-marathon of online-lectures regarding various topics of Occupational Therapy, which can be joined via a Java-based software application. The event is organised by the six OT’s mentioned above, the lecturers are sharing their time free of charge. I try hard not to imagine the expenditure of time put into this in detail – sounds like an organisational nightmare to me – but it seems to work, and this is good enough!

The lectures of OT24VX

Twenty-four lectures will be held by lecturers from the UK, the USA, Canada and New Zealand, the topics can be looked up online, the spread of issues is ranging from humour in Occupational Therapy over reports about OT in other countries (India, China, Bangladesh) through to a report of an OT about the change of her role-models after she became a wheelchair user after her pregnancy. The whole thing is pretty exciting, and considering the sheer number of lectures, there should be something for anybody’s taste.

Necessary software and time lag

Participation is going to be pretty uncomplicated, no more is needed than a working internet connection, a web-browser and an installed Java-software package, the use of a headset is optional. The team of OT4OT provides an extensive set of instructions on their website, additionally there is the possibility to get used to the necessary software (Elluminate) in a virtual training room – which is working very smoothly by the way – you will have the possibility to ask questions via text-chat or microphone, to “raise your hand” and to call up an overview of the actual participants. If you want to participate, I recommend investing a time-amount of ten to fifteen minutes to get used to the system. Please note the extensive weblink-collection at the end of the article, which features all the relevant dates, facts and documents, plus a whiff of background-information. The event will start in Austria on the evening of October, 26th at 8.00 p.m. and will end on the evening of the 27th on 7.55 p.m. – those of you who plan to spend 24 hours in the virtual classroom, are advised to stock up on coffee, energy-drinks and snacks and think about consuming one day of holiday for the event.

We wish everybody a happy World Occupational Therapy Day 2011!
